Since its founding in 2006, Wix has made it their mission to make web development accessible to creators across the globe. Our platform introduced a revolutionary drag-and-drop editor that made creating stunning websites possible for everyone, regardless of their background or level of experience.

The complexity of web apps has evolved alongside the complexity of the web itself. Today, the internet is a sprawling network that brings billions of people together to create art, make friends, learn new skills, and find business solutions to some of today’s biggest challenges. We recognize the necessity of platforms that allow developers to transcend borders and create without limits.

It’s in this spirit that we introduced Velo, our platform for full-stack web development. First released in 2017, Velo empowers developers to rapidly build, manage and deploy professional web apps using JavaScript.

To honor our commitment to developers, we invite you to take part in the creative challenge of building a game using Velo. We hope that through using our platform, you will learn more about how you can push the boundaries of “limitless creation” and build beautiful, feature-rich web apps that you can be proud of for years to come with Wix, Velo, and JavaScript.

Purpose and Goals

Velo is a full stack development platform for creating professional web apps. However, its extensive developer ecosystem means you can use the platform to build things that go beyond a typical website with forms.

On September 7 - 8, Wix will be hosting its first developer conference. Wix DevCon is a free two day conference hosted in New York City intended for developers who build web applications using Velo.

By joining this challenge you will get a chance to learn about some of the different APIs, services, and integrations that will be featured at the Wix DevCon

We are looking forward to seeing you at our conference, whether physically or remote. In addition, by entering this challenge you will get a chance to showcase your game at the conference!

Your goal should be to develop a game that pushes the limits of what is possible with Velo.

How do I get started?

1. Brainstorm your game concept!

From Tic Tac Toe, to Poker, A Creative Writing Contest Platform, Wordle, Text Based RPGS, or even Space Invaders the goal is to push the limits of development on Velo.

Once you have an idea, you can get started by:

Building your Game UI within Velo using Wix Editor Elements and JavaScript

Editor Elements are native drag and drop components you can add to your site using the Wix Editor. By enabling Velo you can access event handlers and other functions to create the interface you need for your game!

Don’t forget to take advantage of Velo’s integrated Apps, Services and APIs. It’s required!

Some examples include:

  • Storing player data: Using the Wix Data API you can have access to frontend and backend functions that allow you to use Velo’s integrated document based database
  • Associate players to their data: Wix Members Area is an app that allows you to create and integrate user accounts via an associated frontend and backend API.
  • Create real-time multiplayer interactions: The Wix Realtime API can allow you to create games that send data between players in real time. This can allow you to create live multiplayer games in a more efficient way than querying and polling!

2. Find a Team or Go Solo. Join our Discord to upskill and meet the community!

Sometimes the best way to learn a new platform is to learn together! If you choose to work together we recommend teams of 2 members.

We would also love for you to join our Discord Server where we will be hosting various sessions, workshops, and challenges to help you grow your technical skills for this challenge.

You can also use it as an opportunity to network with other participants and our existing developer community!

3. Start developing!
